The One Foundation

The church’s one foundation
Is Jesus Christ, our Lord;
We are a new creation
By water and the Word.
From heav’n he came and taught us
What perfect love can be;
Through life and death he sought us,
And rose to set us free.

"For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. I Corinthians 3:11

"For through Him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner; in whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: in whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit." Ephesians 2:18-22

That which is built on any other foundation will fail and fall. Remember the parable of the men who build their houses - the one on the sand, the other on the rock? Anything not built "squarely" on Jesus Christ will fail and fall.

Are we building on traditions, on a belief system, on a denominational "position"? If we do, the only guarantee we have it that it will fail.

Christ Himself must be the rock on which we build. He must be the one foundation.

Dear Name! the Rock on which we build;
  Our shield and hiding-place;
Our never-failing treasury, filled
  With boundless stores of grace.

Thank God for the Knowledge of Sin

By Admin, 2021-10-14

Read Romans Chp. 7

Have we ever thanked God for the knowledge of sin, our own sin, our own sinfulness?

It is a blesséd thing when a man or woman understands that there is within them a law that they cannot erase, cannot change, cannot overcome, cannot escape from. It’s called “the law of sin and death” (Rom. 8:2).

Until a person is born of God they have no real knowledge of it, no real understanding of sin, despite the fact of God’s commandments. Sin only becomes “exceedingly sinful” to those who are born of God. It is only the Spirit of God who is able to show me how “wretched” I am, and bring me to the place where I acknowledge and realise my utter weakness against “the law of sin” within me, and that my struggling and fighting against it is futile.

Yet what a blesséd realisation it is to know such helplessness, to realise that only God can fix me, and to be utterly cast upon Him for such deliverance.

Jesus went willingly to Calvary, once He’d fully come to terms with the Cross and drunk the cup of wrath offered Him by His Father. He realised that there were no options available. There are no options available to us, not if we want to be rid of sin - death is the only answer to my sinfulness. We cannot know the end of sin in ourselves until we give up struggling against it and ask God to crucify it in us, which will mean the crucifixion of self and selfishness.

In writing this it is impossible to convey the fact of which I write, because it can only be known personally, but nevertheless, it can be known and is known. Enter into His rest…

”There remains a rest for the people of God, and they that have entered into His rest have ceased from their own works even as God has ceased from His”. (See: Heb. 4:9-10)

God is thine; disdain to fear
The enemy within;
God shall in thy flesh appear,
And make an end to sin;
God the man of sin shall slay,
Fill thee with triumphant joy;
God shall thrust him out, and say
"Destroy them all, destroy."

All the struggle then is o’er,
And wars and fightings cease;
Israel* then shall sin no more,
But dwell in perfect peace;
All his enemies are gone,
Sin shall have in him no part,
Israel now shall dwell alone
With Jesus in his heart.

In a land of corn and wine
His lot shall be below;
Comforts there, and blessings join,
And milk and honey flow;
Jacob’s well is in his soul,
Gracious dew his heavens distill,
Fill his soul already full,
And shall forever fill.

Charles Wesley

*The Israel of God. “God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and [or even] upon the Israel of God”.
(Galatians 6:15-16)
