Sanctification - what is it?

Properly understood "sanctification" means "purification" - the act of making something pure. The word in the Greek New Testament is ἁγιασμός hagiasmos, from the word ἁγιάζω hagiazō - make holy, and translated "sanctify" in the English Bible. Both words come from the root word ἅγος hagos, which is translated as "holy"; however, a more accurate translation would be "sacred" or "most holy".

Passages in the New Testament where the word "sanctify" or "sanctification" is used.

SANCTIFY (ἁγιάζω hagiazō )

Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth. John 17:17

And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. John 17:19

That He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word... Ephesians 5:26

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.I Thessalonians 5:23

Wherefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered without the gate. Hebrews 13:12

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asks you a reason of the hope that is in you...
I Peter 3:15

SANCTIFICATION (ἁγιασμός hagiasmos)

But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption... I Corinthians 1:30

For this is the will of God, [even] your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour... I Thessalonians 4:3-4

But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth... II Thessalonians 2:13

Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied. I Peter 1:2

The Holy Spirit (ἅγος πνεῦμα) - is the person of the Godhead by whom we are sanctified (made holy). It is He who takes the things of Jesus Christ and "reveals' them unto us. God the Holy Spirit imparts the person of the Godhead - the Word, that was made flesh, lived in the flesh as a man for thirty-three years, was crucified, rose from the dead and entered heaven with His own blood, and is now sitting on the right-hand of the Majesty on high. The things that are His are revealed to us and in us by the Holy Spirit. Thus separating us from what we are by what He is, and making us like Him - “even as He is pure”, “even as He is righteous” that “we should be like Him”.

To be continued...
